The East Riding of Yorkshire town of Pocklington has a rich history dating back at least 1500 years. The name comes from Pocel and tun meaning the settlement of the people of Pocela. As it was on an important transport route from York to Hull, Pocklington had a number of prominent Inns, not least the New Inn. This old coaching house was built in significant grounds and it was in these grounds, circling the New Inn, that a racecourse was established. Records show a meeting took place on Tuesday 4th May 1841 when a Sweepstakes was won by Donna Maria owned by Mr Johnson. His 4 year old filly defeated two rivals to claim the prize. A further meeting, the last at this location, was staged on Tuesday 3rd May 1842 when the closing Purse of Gold over 2 miles was won by Mr Lister’s brown mare by Lottery. |
